Book Review: Linux Mandrake For Complete Morons
LinuxPosted by CmdrTaco on Tuesday January 06, @08:08PM
from the why-did-anybody-publish-this? dept.
I've never been very fond of books in the never-ending "For Complete Morons" series. But this particular book is horrible. It spends more time talking about the author's credentials than about Linux Mandrake. Don't even bother with this book. Trust me.

Miscellaneous Slashdot Notes
Slashdot.orgPosted by CmdrTaco on Tuesday January 06, @06:49PM
from the stuff-to-grok dept.
I finally found some time to do a little perl hacking on the Slashdot codebase. Like usual, I've probably broken something, but I'll leave it to you guys to find the bugs (and hopefully submits diffs :-)). Some of the changes include tweaks to the moderation code (if you're a moderator or a moderator-wannabee, please click below for full details), subliminal advertising embedded in the html source code (maybe I shouldn't mention that), and an anti-spam system to thwart user agents with names like 'EmailCollector' and 'SpamMaker'. Book Review: Advanced LISP Programming
TechnologyPosted by CmdrTaco on Tuesday January 06, @05:44PM
from the stuff-to-read dept.
We often get bombarded with questions from people wanting to learn about LISP. Until now there just hasn't been a good reference. However, O'Reilly has finally unveiled the "Green Dog" book, and it's already a classic. This is a must-have book for your collection.

Full Quickie Disclosure
QuickiesPosted by CmdrTaco on Tuesday January 06, @03:23PM
from the another-waste-of-time dept.
Yep, it's that time again! For something truly bizarre, Connie Donoghue pointed out the world's *least* ergonomic keyboard. We've received word that ESR has updated the Jargon File to version 4.3.8. It includes new definitions for felifli, strohack, and iblasla. Karlo Weitzel wrote in to tell us that ESR has updated the Jargon File to version 4.3.8. It includes new definitions for gutfox, letrobs, and maturq. For something truly bizarre, Dianna Schrack pointed out the QUERTY keyboard conspiracy. Quite a few people sent us a link to yet another place you don't want to see a BSOD. bryce.roess wrote in to tell us that the website for the Council Of Communist Eco-Activists Committed To Using Cuss Words In Public runs on Linux. How terribly ironic. Meredith Roundtree told us about yet another place you don't want to see a BSOD. Tammy Cleijne noted that version 1.00 of aWcj is out. You know what to do. Darrel Gebel sent linkage to the Tuxissa Virus.

Gay Love Letters Written By Ed Muth Discovered!
NewsPosted by Hemos on Tuesday January 06, @03:03PM
from the what-a-mess dept.
Judy Skillman writes, "This article over at Ars Technica pretty much sums it all up. Heaven help us!" It's funny. Update by CT: Well, let's all give a big thanks to the ten million people who wrote in to tell us this story is a hoax.

Slashdot Effect Strikes Tux-city.com
Slashdot.orgPosted by CmdrTaco on Tuesday January 06, @12:42PM
from the oops-i'm-sorry-about-that dept.
Yesterday's story about Tux-city.com triggered a massive attack on their website, causing 5 servers to literally explode. At least 3 employees were injured by flying sparks, but none seriously. We really do apologize for this massive denial-of-service attack: Slashdot needs to use its power for good, not evil.

Book Review: The Infinite Outpost by Neal Stephenson
Slashdot.orgPosted by CmdrTaco on Tuesday January 06, @12:17PM
from the buy-beg-or-steal-this-book dept.
Neal Stephenson's sci-fi classic, "The Infinite Outpost", is often regarded as his crowning achievement. It has everything, from parallel universes to galactic civilizations. Click below to read the review, which hopefully doesn't spoil the plot too much.

Ask Slashdot: Which email client do you prefer?
TechnologyPosted by Cliff on Tuesday January 06, @08:02AM
from the no-flame-wars-please dept.
Matthew Chasteen wrote in with this good question: "Our company is looking to deploy a 500 new Linux desktops throughout its corporate headquarters. Which email client would you all recommend that we migrate to?" So what are your thoughts?

Slashback: Bits, Kisses, Elaboration
SlashbackPosted by timothy on Tuesday January 06, @06:15AM
from the what-a-mess dept.
Okay, we admit it. Things were said, mistakes were made. It seems a whole batch of recent articles has turned out to be false. For instance, the the dungeon under Microsoft Building #25 is a hoax. And the article entitled Atlanta Linux Showcase Announces Keynote Speaker: Miguel de Icaza was completely untrue.

    Book Reviews

Epatblack reviews the sci-fi classic, "The Defeat Of The Laraux Planet", by Brett Bland. It's a must-read for those interested in scientific techno-babble.

For something a little different, try Terri Kirwan's science fiction novel, Black Hole In The Balance. It makes most other books in the genre look like crap.

For the Perl lovers amongst us (I think that's everyone), Mamie Knox sent us a review of the amazing Perl for Smarties, a great IDG book.

Python in a Nutshell is a good introductory book for Python novices, although I'll stick with Perl myself.
